Visiting Roni's Fruteira

Half a block from our house, on the corner, is a little market called Fruteira do Roni (Hon-ee).  For the first 6 months that we lived here, I never set foot in the place because I thought it was dark, dirty and there were bugs flying around.  Slowly my brightly lit Hy-vee ideas about grocery stores diminshed and I started running over there for little things that I needed.  It is very convenient having a market a 30 second walk away.  Roni is very nice, and he actually can have some very good produce if you catch it when it is fresh.

A couple weeks ago for a reward for Isaac and Ethan I gave them each R$1.00 to go spend at Roni's all by themselves.  They came back with several pieces of candy and a popsicle each.  They thought it was awesome to be able to go all by themselves, and now they ask to do it almost daily.
Here is Isaac with his and Ethan's stash on the counter.  I made them let me come along this time to take some pictures, but they wanted me to arrive after they did, and leave before they did.  The lady in the picture is Roni's wife, Suele (sue-eley).

The second time I let them go down, it was after school and it started to get dark.  After they boys were down there for 20 minutes, I got too nervous and had to go check on them.  They were just calculating and deciding, trying to use every last centavo they had in the most advantageous way.
Popsicles is their favorite thing to buy.  This is the icecream freezer.  It is very old and rickety, but still works.

Owen wanted a popsicle, so I helped him pick out a fun looking blue one.  As soon as I opened the package, I knew I was in trouble.  It was bright blue.  It is hard to see in the picture, but his mouth, hands, and arms are stained blue and this is after scrubbing with soap.  Later I read the wrapper.  The popsicle was a paint your mouth and tongue popsicle.  Gotta pay better attention to those things.
