Rio de Janeiro - Beaches

We were very blessed to have the opportunity to take a family vacation to Rio de Janeiro a couple weeks ago.  It was a very exciting time for us.  The boys are excellent little travellers and are up for any adventure Scott and I throw their way.  We spent almost every early morning walking on the beach (Owen decided to wake everyone up at 5:30 every day) and 4 afternoons swimming and playing at the beach.  The boys seemed to have the most fun at the beach, but they say their favorite thing was visiting Christ the Redeemer.
Initially Owen was hesitent to play on the beach.  He was afraid of the waves and was not even sure about the sand.  It did not take him long to get used to the sand.  We laughed because once he got comfortable, he would start doing a little run/skip along the beach.  It was so cute!

Scott and the boys are waiting for the wave to come in so they can run in it.  We ran in and out of the waves a lot!

Scott and I love walking along the beach and the boardwalk.  The boys thought this was torture, pretty much.  One way to get them to do it without whining was to make a game of it and tell them to stay on the black sidewalk or you'll "touch the fire".  Whatever works!

This is Arpoador beach.  We went here to watch the sunset.  There were surfers at this beach and the boys had fun watching them.

This is us at Arpoador with the sunset in the background.  The sunset was breathtaking.  Even the kids were impressed.

Scott and I had fun just sitting on the beach drinking Caiparinas, but I had more fun running in the waves with the kiddos.  The best waves to run in were on Impanema Beach.

The boys made all kinds of creations in the sand.  Here Ethan is writing his name.

Isaac loved making creations in the sand.

Owen is sticking close to Dad here.  He liked to look at the waves, but he did not want to play in the water.

Isaac especially liked it when Scott and I helped him make sand creations.  I am glad he still likes to play with us.  We built some huge "castles" with moats.

Owen liked to help with the sand castles too.  He would skip down the beach, bring back 2 handfulls of sand and place it on the pile and then skip back down the beach.

Owen and running on the beach.

Isaac and Ethan made some cool sand furniture.  Isaac is showing his sand chair.  They also made a sand table and chairs.  Ethan was the first brave kiddo to get his legs buried in the sand, which started everyone in the whole family taking turns getting buried.
All along the beaches they have these gorgeous sand castles/sculptures.  It appeared that the artist hired a homeless person to guard them and ask for donations if you wanted a picture.  This was a really cool one close to our apartment.
